Dear Alex,
I've just finished listening to the 35th-anniversary edition of Dangerous Visions, and I feel compelled to tell you how unforgettable it was. The whole experience is like stepping into a room where the most daring writers of our time have gathered for a secret soirée, each ready to push the boundaries of what we think we can hear.
The book opens with a preface dated 2002, setting the tone for an anthology that has long been called "the most honored collection of fantastic fiction ever published." That alone raises the stakes, and the voice that follows - the 1967 foreword by Harlan Ellison himself - is raw and compelling. Ellison's words, "The Second Revolution," make you aware that the stories you're about to hear are more than just tales; they're declarations of creative rebellion.
What I love about this audio version is how it preserves the structure of the original print. After Ellison's introduction, you're taken to the first essays: a piece by Isaac Asimov, a forward titled Thirty-Two Soothsayers, and a second foreword by Ellison, titled Harlan and I. Each segment feels like a conversation between giants, and the narration captures the subtle shifts in tone as each author takes the mic. The essay by Michael Moorcock and the introduction by Ellison from 2002 are also woven in, giving the anthology a layered, almost collage-like feel.
Then comes the real meat: the stories themselves. I was swept away by "Evensong" by Lester del Rey, a haunting piece that immediately sinks into your mind. Robert Silverberg's "Flies" follows, and its rhythm is almost musical in itself. Frederik Pohl's "The Day After the Day the Martians Came" (the variant title "The Day the Martians Came") throws a playful yet profound twist at us, while Philip José Farmer's "Riders of the Purple Wage" expands the definition of a novella into a bold, experimental narrative.
I couldn't get enough of Harlan Ellison's own "The Prowler in the City at the Edge of the World." The narration here really amplifies the unsettling atmosphere, making every word feel like a step into a strange urban jungle. Brian W. Aldiss's "The Night That All Time Broke Out" is another standout - the way the narrator delivers each line carries the sense that time itself is fracturing.
You'll also hear the sharp, introspective "Faith of Our Fathers" by Philip K. Dick, and Larry Niven's "The Jigsaw Man" - a piece that feels like a quiet, intimate confession. Fritz Leiber's "Gonna Roll the Bones" is a perfect blend of menace and humor, and Joe L. Hensley's "Lord Randy, My Son" gives you a dose of surreal fantasy that feels oddly comforting. Poul Anderson's "Eutopia" turns the concept of utopia on its head, while David R. Bunch's "Incident in Moderan" and "The Escaping" explore the human psyche in unsettling ways.
The collection doesn't shy away from challenging content either. Carol Emshwiller's "Sex and/or Mr. Monson" and Damon Knight's "Shall the Dust Praise Thee?" are bold, thought-provoking, and the narrator's steady pacing allows each line to sink in. Theodore Sturgeon's "If All Men Were Brothers, Would You Let One Marry Your Sister?" takes you on an emotional rollercoaster, while Henry Slesar's "Ersatz" feels like a quiet, contemplative pause.
Even the later entries maintain their edge: Norman Spinrad's "Carcinoma Angels," Roger Zelazny's "Auto-da-Fé," and Samuel R. Delany's "Aye, and Gomorrah ..." - each delivered with a sense of intimacy that invites you into the world of the story rather than just narrating it. The final track, "The Recognition" by J. G. Ballard, feels like a closing curtain, leaving you to ponder the themes of identity and memory.
What struck me most is how the audiobook preserves the anthology's original spirit. Each author's distinct voice is rendered with clarity, and the pacing allows the listener to feel the ebb and flow of the narrative. Whether you're in the car, on a walk, or curled up at night, this edition feels like a conversation with some of the greatest minds in speculative fiction.
In short, Dangerous Visions isn't just a collection of stories; it's a curated experience that pushes the imagination and invites listeners into uncharted territories. I can't recommend it enough - it's the kind of book that stays with you long after the last word fades.
Catch you later,
Sam
