When Juno and her family relocate, you can hear the wariness in her tone as she realizes they've moved straight into trouble. The way she describes arriving in New Plymouth - the city she'd been hoping to avoid - feels so genuine, like having a friend confide in you about an unwanted house move.
What really grabbed me was how Beale balances the thriller elements with Juno's personal growth. The audiobook format makes Juno's confusion about Ivor's attention so palpable; there's this lovely vulnerability in her voice when she talks about finding his interest "both confusing and exciting." Meanwhile, you've got this supernatural tension building as she's called upon to use her special mind powers to save Hera.
The pacing is masterful - just when you think you can catch your breath from one terrifying situation, Juno's making another discovery about love or her own abilities.
