Mackenzi Lee takes the God of Mischief before he perfected his signature smirk and gives us a Loki so desperately thirsty for approval, he makes your cringe-posting ex look well-adjusted. This kid literally wrecks Asgard's most expensive magical antique just trying to prove he's not the villain everyone assumes he is. Spoiler alert: it doesn't work.
The real tragedy here is Loki's friendship with Amora, Asgard's resident mean girl with actual magical talent. She's the only one who doesn't immediately side-eye his chaos magic like it's a suspicious noise in the night. But when their friendship implodes in spectacular fashion, Loki gets exiled to Earth - which honestly sounds like a promotion given how things were going for him.
What follows is Loki's solo adventure through Victorian London, investigating murders while having what can only be described as a magical identity crisis. It's like watching someone try to figure out their personality profile while simultaneously solving crimes. The audiobook narrator presumably does their best to capture Loki's theatrical whining, which I can only imagine sounds like velvet-covered nails on a chalkboard.
Lee crafts a Loki who's equal parts sympathetic and insufferable - basically your typical teenager who happens to be Norse royalty. He's the kind of character who makes you simultaneously want to hug him and also tell him to get over himself, preferably in that order.
The real hook is watching Loki discover that maybe being the villain isn't such a bad gig after all. It's like watching someone realize they look better in leather than they ever did in their mom's hand-me-down armor.
