Reed, their creator-alchemist-daddy-not-daddy figure, has ambitions that would make Machiavelli blush. He's essentially running a cosmic-level parenting experiment with divine ascension as the prize. What could possibly go wrong with that plan? (Don't answer that - the book already does, and the results are spectacularly chaotic.)
McGuire's prose dances between laugh-out-loud funny and genuinely moving without missing a beat. The audiobook format really shines here, especially during the scenes where Dodger starts speaking in mathematical equations - somehow, it actually works as performance art. The narrator deserves a medal for making calculus sound like Shakespearean iambic pentameter.
