"A Brief Lesson in Native American Astronomy" manages to be both a celestial love story and a brutal examination of fame in virtual reality, which is apparently child's play for someone who's also written Star Wars novels. "Falling Bodies" takes the classic "fish out of water" trope and launches it into space-literally-while "Eye and Tooth" delivers black horror that would make Jordan Peele proud.
What's particularly impressive is how Roanhorse treats genre boundaries like suggestions rather than rules. She's equally comfortable writing intimate character studies and epic world-building, often in the same story.
