The woman who brought us the Between Earth and Sky trilogy and somehow found time to write for Marvel and FX has packed this audiobook with stories that effortlessly switch between gut-punching social commentary and cosmic horror, often within the same paragraph.
The title novella returns to her Sixth World universe, because apparently Roanhorse couldn't resist giving us more post-apocalyptic Indigenous futurism served with a side of family drama and near-death experiences. It's like Breaking Bad meets The Fifth Season, if Breaking Bad involved skinwalkers and had better representation. The collection also includes "Welcome to Your Authentic Indian Experience™"-the story that launched a thousand literary careers and probably made several award committees question why they hadn't been paying attention sooner. It's the kind of sharp, satirical piece that makes you laugh while quietly destroying your worldview.
"A Brief Lesson in Native American Astronomy" manages to be both a celestial love story and a brutal examination of fame in virtual reality, which is apparently child's play for someone who's also written Star Wars novels. "Falling Bodies" takes the classic "fish out of water" trope and launches it into space-literally-while "Eye and Tooth" delivers black horror that would make Jordan Peele proud.
What's particularly impressive is how Roanhorse treats genre boundaries like suggestions rather than rules. She's equally comfortable writing intimate character studies and epic world-building, often in the same story. This audiobook doesn't just showcase her versatility; it practically dares other writers to keep up. The only downside is that listening to this collection might ruin short fiction for you permanently, which is apparently a risk Roanhorse is willing to take.
