Book description
The Dragon's Path: A Fantasy Primer on How Not to Start a War (But Somehow Doing It Anyway)
Let's be honest-Daniel Abraham has cornered the market on "genteel chaos." In The Dragon's Path, he introduces us to a world where diplomacy is a punchline, economics are a weapon, and the noble art of avoiding conflict is mastered by exactly zero people. It's like watching a slow-motion car crash, except the car is a kingdom and everyone's cheering because they think it's a parade.
We open with Marcus, a grizzled ex-hero who's apparently allergic to glory. He'd rather sip tea than swing a sword, but alas, heroism is the fantasy equivalent of a timeshare you can't get out of. When his men are drafted into what can only be described as a medieval suicide squad, Marcus takes the path of least resistance-which, naturally, involves maximum subterfuge. His solution? Dodging conscription with the kind of bureaucratic loopholes usually reserved for tax evaders and fantasy novel protagonists with trust funds.
Then there's Cithrin, a banking ward with the emotional range of a spreadsheet and the survival instincts of a caffeinated squirrel. Tasked with smuggling an entire nation's gold through a war zone, she treats geopolitical catastrophe like a really inconvenient layover. Her expertise in finance is matched only by her complete inability to grasp that swords don't care about fiscal policy. It's refreshing, really-finally, a fantasy protagonist who understands that money talks, but also literally cannot walk.
Enter Geder, the runt of the noble litter. This man couldn't lead a parade to a brewery, yet somehow ends up with a front-row seat to history's worst power play. He's more interested in philosophy than conquest, which is adorable-until it isn't. Abraham writes him with the kind of tragic inevitability usually reserved for Greek tragedies and reality TV stars. You watch, horrified and fascinated, as Geder becomes less of a pawn and more of a wrecking ball with a title.
The plot kicks off with what is essentially a diplomatic tiff between the Free Cities and the Severed Throne-because apparently nobody in this world has heard of de-escalation or a good old-fashioned timeout. What starts as a minor spat snowballs into full-blown continental disaster, all thanks to a mysterious figure clawing their way out of the history books like a poorly scheduled sequel. It's not just a path to war; it's a scenic route with guided tours and a gift shop.
Abraham's prose is sharp enough to shave with, but not so sharp that it cuts the reader. The audiobook version, narrated with the kind of gravitas usually reserved for apocalyptic news anchors, brings a weight to the text that makes even the most mundane banking maneuver sound like high drama. And maybe that's the point-this is a world where money, philosophy, and misplaced idealism can be just as deadly as swords.
Sure, The Dragon's Path has its flaws. The pacing can be glacial when it's not lunging forward like a startled horse, and some characters take a bit too long to realize they're in over their heads. But Abraham's gift lies in making the mundane feel momentous and the inevitable feel shocking. It's a fantasy novel that treats politics like a blood sport and economics like a battlefield, narrated by people who are just trying to survive it all without getting stabbed.
In short, it's a damn fine start to a series that promises more intrigue, incompetence, and large-scale disasters. If you like your fantasy with a side of satire and a sprinkle of impending doom, this is your book. Just don't ask any of the characters for financial advice. Or military strategy. Or life advice, really.
