There's the mysterious magical barrier around New Atlantis's fancy immortality clinic, political intrigue that would make Machiavelli weep, and the small matter of his own traumatic past resurfacing like an unwelcome guest at a dinner party.
The audiobook narration presumably does its best to keep listeners engaged while Edwards throws every possible plot thread into the mix-barriers, conspiracies, tortured flashbacks, and enough court politics to make Game of Thrones look like a simple family gathering. It's urban fantasy's equivalent of that friend who starts telling you about their dream while you're just trying to enjoy coffee.
What's particularly impressive is how Edwards manages to make immortality seem like such a hassle. Most people would kill to live forever; here, it apparently comes with so much paperwork and existential dread that you'd rather take the mortality package deal.
The relationship drama between Rune and his various romantic/political entanglements apparently provides enough material to keep therapy sessions booked for years. Throw in a bodyguard with commitment issues and a magical barrier that's clearly seen better days, and you've got yourself a proper fantasy cocktail.
This third installment promises to drag our protagonist's skeletons out of closets he probably thought were locked, all while the fate of the world hangs in the balance like a really expensive chandelier. Because nothing says "epic climax" like combining personal trauma with global catastrophe.
