I've just finished listening to Moorcock's The Runestaff and felt compelled to write you immediately. You know my fondness for tales that twist fate and destiny into knots-this one delivers admirably.
Moorcock's name has been familiar to me since our university days, though I confess I'd only encountered his more literary works previously. Here, he returns to the fantastic with characteristic verve. The audiobook narration brings such vitality to Hawkmoon's world-though I do wish the performer had given Meliadus a more distinctive voice, as his menace sometimes gets lost in the general excellence of delivery.
The concept of the Runestaff itself is fascinating: an artifact that binds its wielder to consequences of their own making. Poor Baron Meliadus, swearing vengeance against Castle Brass-how deliciously Gothic! One can't help but admire Moorcock's ability to weave Burroughs' planetary romance with something far more philosophically complex. The way destiny becomes both weapon and trap reminds me of Shaw's The Apple Cart, which Moorcock cites as influential.
What struck me most was how the audiobook format enhances the epic scope. The narrator's pacing during battle sequences is particularly effective-those moments in distant lands where Hawkmoon finds himself entangled in schemes beyond comprehension. The sound design subtlely underscores the otherworldly elements without overwhelming Moorcock's prose.
I'm told this is the fourth in a series, though I found myself sufficiently drawn in without prior knowledge. Something about the eternal struggle between order and chaos feels freshly examined here, particularly through the lens of forced destiny.
You'd enjoy this immensely, especially the way Moorcock plays with those "Eternal Champion" themes. Reminds me why we fell in love with speculative fiction in the first place.
