The setup is classic fantasy gold: dying king, mysterious invader, ancient prophecy about some lost magical shard that's been missing for eight hundred years. But here's the kicker - it's been sitting in a dragon's lair this whole time with some elven hero who never made it back out. Yikes!
What really grabbed me though was our reluctant hero Midas. This guy isn't your typical chosen one - he's just a minor noble who'd rather stay home with his kids than go dragon hunting. I mean, who wouldn't want to protect their sons instead of chasing down ancient MacGuffins? The internal conflict made him feel real, you know?
Cross has definitely paid his dues traveling the world as a diplomat - you can feel that global experience in how he builds the different cultures and lands. The guy's lived in ten countries and survived coup attempts, so when he writes about dangerous quests, it actually feels authentic rather than just copied from other fantasy books.
